In 1731 Sadatoshi Nakaji authored a three-volume picture book entitled Ehon Zuka (i.e., Picture Book of the Materials of Painting). Many of the pictures were likely intended to provide art students with models for painting a range of subjects, including flowers and birds. The book’s twenty pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The shape and surface details of flowers were drawn more accurately than for birds, typical of early 18th century Japanese art. To see a gallery with larger pictures click here.
